Lessons in the Key of Today for Friday, August 18th, 2017:
The player of the inner game comes to value the art of relaxed concentration above all other skills; he discovers a true basis for self-confidence; and he learns that the secret to winning any game lies in not trying too hard.
–W. Timothy Gallwey, The Inner Game of Tennis: The Classic Guide to the Mental Side of Peak Performance
We are about to begin a new journey, or a new chapter, if you will. There is an initiation or integration that is required for this rite of passage, though. These times carry uncertainty, perhaps an unknown destination, and occasionally some turbulent waters. Have no fear, though, for there is always the calm after the storm.
I wonder… what is it you wish for? An end to personal or collective suffering? Love? Happiness? Contentment? Joy? A sense of self? Rewards for a job well done? Forgiveness? Comfort? Peace? Self-expression? Freedom from fear?
Today’s tension stems from our deep desire for inner peace, and the illusive nature of that sense of well-being. But in order to find perfect harmony, or balance, we must be willing to accept a few things that are a given. Serenity and well-being are actually our natural state, so what we are really doing is returning to sanity. The new waters are simply a place of comfort inviting us home. It is the return to self, the true Self, that has been there all along, under the banana peels and candy wrappers and whatever other trash we have heaped up there.
Understanding ourselves is a two-fold process. There is first the seeing of what we are not, then the discovery of that which we are.
You are never as stuck as you think you are. You can always, always sing a new song, at any moment. You always get to put a new record on. If you don’t like the tune playing in your head, change it. You are not a slave to yesterday.
It is not always easy to do the work of clearing, releasing and embracing the new thoughts, a new groove, but it is absolutely worth it. The secret is in not trying too hard. It’s more about letting go, surrender, and moving with Spirit, rather than fighting your natural inner flow. It’s about allowing what is true for you, not someone else, be the deciding factor.
The rewards of being conscious of our inner game, of our thoughts, owning them, knowing what we truly believe, are worth it. Finding inner harmony with your Higher Self is the outcome of such intense reflection and soul searching. Like being one with a tennis ball, inner peace, relaxation and natural flow is what winning really is. It’s doing your personal best.
I could use some harmony in all the dissonance, how about you?
Today’s triad: New waters, new song. Inner peace and harmony. Winning sanity.
